How to Repair and Test a Fire Hose
Jan 06, 2026
Sanjiang Fire Protection presents the definitive guide to fire hose repair and pressure testing
Step 1: Repairing with a Patch (for minor damage)
1. Cut the Patch: Cut a patch from a scrap piece of hose liner or use a specialized vulcanizing patch kit. Round the corners of the patch to prevent peeling.
2. Prepare the Surface: Buff the damaged area and the inside of the patch with a wire brush or sandpaper to create a rough, clean surface for adhesion.
3. Apply Vulcanizing Cement: Apply a thin, even layer of vulcanizing cement to both the prepared area on the hose and the patch. Allow it to become tacky (usually 3-5 minutes).
4. Apply the Patch: Firmly press the patch onto the damaged area, starting from the center and working outwards to eliminate air bubbles.
5. Cure the Repair: Use a fie hose repair press or a roller to apply strong, even pressure. Allow the repair to cure fully as per the cement manufacturer's instructions before testing.

Step 2: Repairing a fire hose Coupling
If the coupling is damaged, it must be replaced.
1. Cut the Damaged End: Use a sharp hose cutter to make a clean, straight cut, removing the damaged coupling.
2. Prepare the Hose End: Loosen the swivel ring on the new coupling and slide it onto the hose. Buff the outside of the hose end to create a rough surface.
3. Attach the New Coupling: Insert the stem of the new coupling into the hose end. Ensure it is seated correctly.
4. Tighten the Swivel Ring: Using a coupling wrench, tighten the swivel ring securely according to the manufacturer's specifications. Do not overtighten.
Step 3: Pressure Testing
After the repair, the hose must be hydrostatically pressure tested to ensure its integrity. Test it at 1.5 times its service pressure or according to your local safety standards. Never use a hose that has not been properly tested after a repair.
When in Doubt, Replace.
Your safety is our priority. If you are unsure about the repair process or if the damage is extensive, we strongly recommend replacing the hose with a new, certified one from Sanjiang Fire Control Equipment.
